Breaking: Meta's Labyrinth 1.1 Now Live – Messages Reach Encrypted Backups Instantly
Meta has begun rolling out Labyrinth 1.1, a major upgrade to its encrypted storage protocol for Messenger. The update ensures that end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) message backups are more reliable than ever.

With Labyrinth 1.1, incoming messages are written directly to the recipient's encrypted backup as they are sent. Previously, backups only updated when a user's device came online and synced.
Background: How Labyrinth Secures Messenger History
Meta introduced Labyrinth in 2023 to provide E2EE message storage for Messenger. It allows users to carry their message history across devices without Meta or anyone else being able to read the content.
Labyrinth encrypts messages with keys that only the sender and recipient possess. The protocol has become a foundational layer for privacy in Messenger.
Labyrinth 1.1: Key Improvements
The new sub-protocol eliminates dependency on device syncing. Now, senders encapsulate each message with an encryption key and deposit it directly into the recipient's encrypted backup – like dropping a sealed envelope into a locked box.
“This means messages survive even if you lose your phone, switch devices, or go months without signing in,” said a Meta spokesperson. “The reliability improvement is immediate and measurable.”
What This Means for Users
For everyday Messenger users, this translates to fewer gaps in chat history when moving to a new phone or re-downloading the app. Meta reports seeing “meaningful gains” in the number of messages successfully backed up and restored.

Security remains paramount: only end-to-end encryption keys protect each message. “No one but you and the people you’re talking to can read your messages – not even us,” the spokesperson emphasized.
Rollout and Availability
Labyrinth 1.1 is being deployed broadly to all Messenger users. No action is required on the user's end – the update happens server-side and automatically applies to new backups.
