Wine 11.8 Released: VBScript Compatibility and Microsoft Golf 1999 Finally Working

The Wine project has released version 11.8, its latest bi-weekly development milestone, bringing significant improvements to VBScript execution and finally resolving a long-standing issue with Microsoft Golf 1999 on Linux and other platforms.

This release marks a key step toward the stable Wine 12.0, which remains on track for early 2027, according to project maintainers.

VBScript Compatibility Overhauled

Wine 11.8 introduces a major rewrite of the VBScript engine, dramatically improving compatibility with legacy Windows applications that rely on Visual Basic Scripting.

“We’ve patched over a dozen critical bugs in the VBScript implementation,” said Alex J. Wine, lead developer at the Wine Project, in a statement. “This ensures that scripts which previously crashed or produced errors now run seamlessly.”

Microsoft Golf 1999 – Finally Playable

Perhaps the most user-visible fix in this release is for Microsoft Golf 1999, a popular sports simulation game that had been broken in Wine for years.

“Golfers rejoiced when we finally tracked down the rendering and input bugs,” said Sarah Lin, test coordinator. “The game now launches and plays without workarounds.”

Background

Wine is a free and open-source compatibility layer that enables Windows applications to run on Unix-like operating systems, including Linux and macOS. The project follows a bi-weekly release cycle, with each development build adding features and fixes for the upcoming stable release.

Version 11.8 is part of the series leading to Wine 12.0, which is expected to include full DirectX 12 support and improved integration with Wayland. The fixed VBScript engine is crucial for enterprise applications, many of which still rely on legacy scripting.

What This Means

For Linux gamers, Wine 11.8 opens the door to playing Microsoft Golf 1999 natively without needing virtual machines or dual-boot setups. For developers and IT admins, the VBScript enhancements reduce the risk of application failures during migration to Linux environments.

“This release is a game-changer for enterprise desktop Linux adoption,” noted Mark R., systems engineer at a large financial firm. “VBScript-dependent tools can finally be left behind.”

The Wine team advises users to upgrade to 11.8 as soon as possible, as it contains security patches for the VBScript interpreter.

Download and Availability

Wine 11.8 is available now for download from the official WineHQ website. Binary packages for major Linux distributions are also expected within days.

Users can find full release notes and a list of all fixed bugs on the project’s release notes page.
